The article investigates the disconnect between 1) the methods researchers use during informed consent and 2) what African American and Latino community members want during the process. The analysis is based on the results from two U.S. surveys, one with researchers, and one with African American and Latino community members. The methods that are used by researchers and those that are preferred by the community respondents were compared with strategies in the literature shown to be effective for conveying information. The authors then recommend specific ways that the informed consent process can be improved to both increase participant comprehension and satisfaction with the overall process.
